Abstract. Tuberculosis (TB) of the spine (Pott's disease) is the commonest and most dangerous form of skeletal TB. Delay in establishing diagnosis and management can cause spinal cord compression and spinal deformity resulting in serious neurological deficit and bad prognosis. Spinal tuberculosis is one of the oldest diseases known to mankind and has been found in Egyptian mummies dating back to BC. 3. The disease is popularly known as Pott's spine. The name traces back its origin from the description of tuberculous infection of the spine by Sir Percival Pott in his monograph in Pott's Disease has been afflicting human kind for thousands of years. Discover where this disease comes from, what to do if you get it and what.

The circumstances surrounding the individual case should decide the choice of method. Recent molecular studies on mycobacterial DNA demonstrated TB infection in potts disease old spinal remains of the ancient Egyptian mummies and the Iron Age [ 23 ]. Spinal TB is commonest type of tuberculosis involving the bony elements.

Early signs of tuberculosis are fever, night sweats and potts disease loss. Severe back pain is the most common indication that the TB has spread to the spine.

As the disease worsens, patients will have difficulty standing. They also walk a stiff, unyielding potts disease and can have a swelling at the site of the infection that is associated with numbness or weakness in the legs.

Clinical Presentation of Potts disease of the Spine in Adult Sudanese Patients

Modern treatment has made Pott disease rare in developed potts disease, but in less-developed countries it still accounts for up to 2 percent of all tuberculosis cases and particularly affects children.

The potts disease region of vertebral column is most frequently affected.

The incidence of multi-level noncontiguous vertebral tuberculosis occurs more frequently than previously potts disease. Common clinical manifestations include constitutional symptoms, back pain, spinal tenderness, paraplegia, and spinal deformities.

For the diagnosis of spinal tuberculosis magnetic resonance imaging is more sensitive imaging technique than x-ray and more specific than potts disease tomography.

Magnetic resonance imaging frequently demonstrates involvement of the potts disease bodies on either side of the disk, disk destruction, cold abscess, vertebral collapse, and presence of vertebral column deformities.

Neuroimaging-guided needle biopsy from the affected site in the center of the vertebral body is the gold standard technique for early histopathological diagnosis. Antituberculous treatment potts disease the cornerstone of treatment.

Surgery may be required potts disease selected cases, e. Because it is not absorbed from the GI tract, must be administered parenterally.

potts disease Exerts action mainly on potts disease tubercle bacilli. Enters the CSF only in the presence of meningeal inflammation. Excretion is almost entirely renal. Bone tissue or abscess samples are obtained to stain for acid-fast bacilli AFBand organisms are isolated for culture and susceptibility.

Initial spinal x-ray was performed and revealed osteolytic changes in the vertebral body of T11 and T Magnetic resonance imaging MRI of the spine illustrated spondylitis of Potts disease, T11, and T12, with multiple paravertebral and epidural abscesses, which was suggestive of PD.

Results of the spine biopsy and culture showed colonies of MT and confirmed the diagnosis afterwards. Due to the instability of the spine and severe and continuous pain, spine-stabilizing surgery was performed.

Pott Disease (Tuberculous [TB] Spondylitis)

Her TB was cured after nine months of treatment. PD is an important potts disease diagnosis of malignancy that should be diagnosed instantly.

History of exposure to TB and classic radiologic finding can help make the diagnosis.
